A merino one-bag wardrobe, built from Unbound Merino

Seven days of clothes in half a carry-on. What it costs, what reviewers found after weeks of wear, and the care rules that matter.

Why merino for one bag

A one-bag week depends on clothes you can wear more than once. That is the case for merino wool. Pack Hacker describes it as naturally odour resistant, quick drying and slow to wrinkle, and says it found Unbound Merino's claim that you can go long stretches between washes to be true. Carlos Grider of A Brother Abroad wore an Unbound tee through months in Indonesia and washed it three times in two months. He suggests two of these shirts can make a full travel shirt wardrobe, at 10 to 20 wears between washes. Tilted Map's reviewer, who has worn the brand for years, says the clothes don't wrinkle and stay fresh for days and even weeks.

Those are other people's experiences. Tilted Map offers a discount code with Unbound Merino, so it has a commercial link to the brand. So do we: we may earn commission. Treat the wash counts as a best case. Hot climates and long days will shorten them.

The wardrobe

Here is a seven-day men's set from our Tour list, priced on unboundmerino.com on October 1, 2026. Some colours cost more than the base price shown.

PieceQtyPrice eachSubtotal
Men's Merino Crew Neck T-Shirt2$68 ($95 to $98 in some colours)$136
Men's Merino Button-Up1$140 (on sale; list $170)$140
Men's Merino Polo1$125$125
Men's Merino Crew Sweater1$158 ($188 in some colours)$158
Men's Merino Wool Boxer Briefs3$35 ($45 in some colours)$105
Bluffworks Gramercy Pants 2.0 (not merino)1$118$118

That comes to $782, or $664 for the merino alone. Wear the sweater and the Bluffworks Hopsack Blazer on the plane, and the bag holds two tees, a button-up, a polo, three pairs of briefs and a spare pair of trousers if you want one. A simple rotation: tee, polo, button-up, second tee, button-up, first tee, polo. Wash briefs in the sink every other night. Pack Hacker counts quick drying among merino's strengths, and that is what makes three pairs workable.

The pieces

The crew neck T-shirt is the base layer for every day. The button-up covers the meeting and the dinner; the sale price can end. The polo sits between the two. The crew sweater is extrafine merino and, per Unbound Merino, machine washable. The boxer briefs are $35 in black, the cheapest way to try the fabric.

Hot weather and cold

Merino is sold as a fabric for both. Pack Hacker says it breathes in hot weather and insulates in the cold, the same way it works for the sheep. Carlos Grider of A Brother Abroad wore his Unbound tee in the Southeast Asian heat and in the cooler mountains of Bali, and found it dried quickly after rain and wicked sweat. For a cold-weather week, the crew sweater over a tee replaces a fleece or a second jumper.

The laundry plan

Seven days on this list needs one wash. Do it on night four. Briefs and one tee go in the sink with a little soap, rolled in a towel to squeeze out the water, then hung overnight. Use cold water, and keep merino out of hotel dryers.

For her

The same idea works from our Curve list. The women's crew neck tee is $98 in the in-stock colours. The Merino Travel Pants are $218, a tapered barrel trouser that Unbound Merino describes as 95% Italian merino with all-way stretch. The Boatneck T-Shirt Dress is $145, with side pockets, and the brand says it packs easily. Two tees, the trousers and the dress make a long weekend.

How it holds up

Durability is the honest question with fine merino. Pack Hacker reports that an earlier version of the crew neck developed snags and small holes within 15 wears. The updated version uses a substantially thicker fabric, and over a similar 15-wear test it showed no visible damage. Pack Hacker also found the first wear very slightly itchy. A Brother Abroad points to the reinforced stitching and the brand's guarantee as reasons he expects his shirt to last.

Care rules that matter

  • Hang it to air between wears, somewhere with some airflow. Pack Hacker passes on this advice from Unbound Merino.
  • Unbound Merino suggests avoiding deodorants and antiperspirants with alcohol, which can stain.
  • Wash cold, by machine or by hand.
  • Do not put it in the dryer. Pack Hacker is blunt about what happens to the size.

Is it worth the money?

A $68 merino tee costs several times a cotton one. The case for it rests on wears per wash and items per bag. If two shirts replace five on a trip, and each lasts as long as the updated Pack Hacker sample suggests, the numbers can work. If you run hot, sweat heavily or want something you can tumble dry, cotton or a synthetic travel shirt may suit you better. Start with one tee and one pair of briefs before buying the whole set.
