Castle: the quiet-luxury carry-on kit
A black Globe-Trotter, a Métier tote, a Mark Cross box bag and the small leather goods inside them. What each piece is, what it costs and where the catches are.
The idea
Castle is our top-end level for her. Clinic. Launch. Spyder. The brief is a kit for two or three nights that looks the same at the gate as at dinner, with no logos doing the work. Piano black, navy and camel. Prices are from each maker's own site on October 1, 2026.
The case
The Globe-Trotter Centenary Carry-On in Black/Black/Black is $2,695. Globe-Trotter pairs black fibreboard with black leather corners and black fittings, and designs it for one to three nights. It holds 34 litres, weighs 4.2 kilograms and is handmade in England. Two catches. A small number of airlines may ask economy passengers to check it, and the warranty is five years against defects, excluding scuffs from baggage handlers. Expert World Travel notes there are no interior pockets, so add the GT Small Packing Cube at $135. Our Centenary review has more.
The tote
The Métier Incognito 42 in black Soft Grain leather is $3,450. Métier describes a classic cabas with a discreet top zip, hidden magnetic pockets inside and out, hand-stitched handles and stress points, and room for up to a 16-inch laptop. It calls the size day to overnight. The leather is Italian calfskin that, per Métier, resists scratching but will develop a lived-in patina. Prices on Métier's US site include duties, and returns are accepted within 14 days. We found no independent long-term review of this tote, so this is the maker's description.
The box bag
The Mark Cross Grace 18 in black smooth calf is $2,690. Mark Cross says it is handcrafted in Italy, and its detachable strap adjusts from shoulder to crossbody. Dujour traces the name to Grace Kelly, who carried a Mark Cross case in Rear Window. It is a structured box with a fixed shape, so check its size against your phone before you buy. It rides inside the tote on the plane.
Shoes
The Manolo Blahnik BB Calf 90 is $895 in black. Roxanne Adamiyatt of Town & Country wears the BB 90 and says the heel is set slightly forward, which makes it easier to walk in. PurseBlog's guide says BB sizing varies, that they generally run big, and that the consensus is to order half a size down. Sources differ on the year it was introduced, so we won't give one.
For the flight and the hotel, the Le Monde Beryl Luna Slipper at $575 is soft lamb leather with an 8mm heel, made in Italy. Le Monde Beryl says it fits small and suggests half a size up.
Clothes
- Gabriela Hearst Seymore Knit Midi Dress, dark navy wool and cashmere, $1,790. Clinic, launch, dinner.
- Olivia von Halle Issa Slip Dress, $620. Olivia von Halle lists 19-momme silk satin, cut on the bias.
- Johnstons of Elgin Camel Cashmere Stole, $965. Made in Scotland. A blanket on the plane.
Small leather goods
- Smythson Passport Cover in Panama, $260. Black crossgrain calf, navy inside, two gold-stamped pockets for passport and boarding pass, 10 by 14.5 centimetres, per Smythson.
- Smythson Organiser Tech Pouch, $665. Zip closure, an internal zip pocket, two pockets for cables and two slip pockets, 24 by 16 by 5.5 centimetres, per Smythson.
- Mark Cross Harry Washbag, $650, in tumbled grain leather. Mark Cross files it under men's. It does the same job.
How it packs
The case takes the clothes and shoes. Roll the stole and the slip, fold the dress once over the case's inner straps, and put both pairs of shoes in their dust bags at the hinge end. The cube takes the washbag's overflow and chargers. The tote takes the laptop, the tech pouch, the passport cover and the Grace. On arrival, the tote goes to the meeting and the Grace goes to dinner.
What it adds up to
Case, packing cube, tote and box bag come to $8,970. Shoes add $1,470, clothes $3,375 and small leather goods $1,575. All of it: $15,390. The pieces that carry the look are the case, the tote and the box bag. The rest can come from any level.
Where to save
The biggest saving is the case. Swap the Centenary for the Monos Carry-On from our Curve list and you save $2,420, gain about six litres and get a lighter bag. You lose the fibreboard and the look. Swap the Manolo for the Sarah Flint Perfect Pump 85 on Curve, $495, and you save $400.
A note on sources
Most writing about pieces at this price is brand copy or editors describing their own purchases. We found real reviews for the Globe-Trotter and the Manolo, and maker specifications for the rest. Where a claim is the maker's, we've said so.
